Bokashi Buckets & Bran

Allows you to compost 100% of your food waste!

These fabulous Bokashi Kitchen Composters allows you to compost 100% of your organic household waste.
This can used in conjunction with a traditional wormery or compost heap/bin or straight into the soil.

You simply place your kitchen waste into the airtight bucket and sprinkle over with a handful of
Bokashi Bran.
Bokashi (meaning fermentation)
is a bran based material made with beneficial micro-organisms and
molasses which re-activates on contact with the slightly moist organic waste and starts to ferment and
decompose the waste.
It neutralises smells.

allowing you to turn ALL your kitchen waste into nutrient rich compost with little odour (a slight cidery
hops smell). This includes meat, fish, dairy products and all cooked food. The process is odourless and
doesn't attract flies so the Bokashi Bucket container can be safely kept in the kitchen.

The Bokashi performs the first stages of decomposition using the active micro-organisms. Bokashi Buckets
are clean, odourless and simple to use. Sprinkle some Bokashi Bran over the top everytime you add new
organic household waste into your bucket and repeat the process (like a layered lasagne) until the Bokashi Bucket
is full. Leave it sealed for 2-3 weeks in a dark preferably warm place (under a sink, in a garage) to complete
the fermentation. The odour of the ready bucket should have a cidery fermented smell. Once complete, the
bokashi
compost is ready to be dug into the garden bury it 30 -40cm below the soil where it will turn into a rich
bio-active compost after 6-8 weeks. Leave it in tbe bucket , the longer the better.

After 6-8 weeks in the ground it will turn into compost and will leave your soil thriving with beneficial
micro organisms which will help your plants utilize soil nutrients better therefore healthier stronger
more productive plants.
When introduced to a compost heap, the Bokashi'd waste acts as an accellerator
to speed up the composting process. Because the Bokashi has fermented the food and neutralised any
odour, it should no longer attract vermin when put into your composter or compost heap or ground or below the soil.

The process also gives you a liquid cidery smelling by product which you can use as a plant food (dilute to one
part golden liquid to hundred parts unchlorinated water (for city water leave water out over night in open container
then use it the following day ) and spray on your garden within days of harvesting the liquid. Introduce thriving
beneficial micro-organisms to your garden.

Tips and Hints

  • Use only fresh organic materials such as:

Vegetables, fruits, grains …milk and cheese are okay but extra Bokashi Bran may be needed.

Cooked or uncooked meat: Beef, Poutry, Pork and Fish.

Big bones chopped into small pieces (extra Bokashi might be needed)

Coffee grounds with or without paper filter.

Cutting your waste into smaller pieces will speed up the fermentation process. Put Bokashi Bran
between every 6cm layer of household organic waste. A light sprinkling over the
whole area.

  • Do not include plastics, cigarette butts, tin cans or aluminum.

  • Do not add water, excessive amount of liquids or put the bucket in the sun. Avoid large amounts
of liquid into you Bokashi Bucket.

  • You can never add too much Bokashi Bran.

  • Wash the bucket after each use.

  • Bokashi works best anaerobically (that is without oxygen). So remember the less air that comes in
contact with the bokashi’d organic waste the better. So compact the compost by pressing it down to
remove air pockets with a plastic bag. You may also want to use a barrier (the plastic bag) to cover
the waste within the bucket separating the bokashi from the remaining air in the bucket. So cover the
waste with a plastic bag or an old lid etc within your bucket. Completely cover the surface of the
organic waste then put the bucket lid back on.

  • Always close the lid tightly and drain the liquid at the bottom if possible.

  • This is a new form of composting do not be afraid to experiment with more or less bokashi bran.

Starting your Bokashi Bucket tip

  • When starting your Bokashi Bucket add 5cm-10cm of old egg tray holder cardboard or such like to absorb
extra golden liquid. Add 2-3 good handfuls of Bokashi Bran on top of the egg trays, then start with the
organic household waste alternating with the Bokashi Bran. The cardboard will decompose with
household waste when added to wormery, compost heap or in the ground/soil.

  • You might see a whitish mould on top of you Bokashi Bucket waste with a sweet and sour pickled smell
this is good, you want to promote this as fermentation is taking place.

  • Your Bokashi Bucket breaks down waste with litte oxygen (anaerobically) therefore you want to open your
bucket as little as possible (so less oxygen). Accumulate your organic waste until the end of the day then
try put it in the bucket once or twice daily. Therefore by opening the bucket less frequently there will
be less exposure to air which equals quicker fermentation.

  • The longer you leave your Bokashi Bucket to ferment in the bucket the quicker it will break down in the
soil and turn into rich pro-biotic compost.

  • Bokashi Bran can also be used as a compost activator or for pit toilets to break down the waste.

  • Keep two buckets one that is fermenting and one that is being filled daily.

  • Never add rotten food to your bokashi bucket as these are different organisms to bokashi bran
and causes rotting (bad smell black mould), while bokashi ferments or pickles your waste (white
mould = good). (But if you have added rotten waste by accident just add extra Bokashi bran on top
which can help to prevent further rotting).

What to do with the finished Bokashi product after 2-3 weeks of pickling.

    • Fermented bokashi compost will look very different to normal black compost. It will retain a
lot of its original physical properties and will have a pickled appearance. Complete breakdown
of the material will only take place once it’s transferred into the soil and has been in the soil
for 1-2 months. White mould is a sign of beneficial bacteria.

    • Dig a trench 30-40cm deep and pour your Bokashi waste along the trench bury it 15cm below the
ground. Leave for 6-8 weeks and watch the amazing results. Bokashi is not toxic to pests.

    • Or just dig it into the soil. Wait 2-3 weeks before you plant, allowing it to settle.

    • Most importantly we are reducing our landfills and not wasting our precious household waste, turning
it into a rich compost. It is beneficial to us and beneficial to the planet.
